untied SA302 - information for lenders and other third parties

This page is for lenders, landlords and others who are seeking references.

If you would rather get a tax return or SA302 from us directly rather than the taxpayer (note the IRMark comment below), we can provide this with their permission. While we do not review any data filed, in this scenario you will know what data has been filed.

About untied and and Earnr

untied is HMRC-recognised software.

untied also powers submissions for Earnr which is another brand within the same group. untied does not act as tax advisors or accountants.

Documents are issued by software not by HMRC

Tax returns and SA302 forms cannot be obtained from HMRC if the filing has been made using software. They are instead issued by the software.

Approximately half of all tax returns are filed using software each year. In this case Tax returns (SA100) and the SA302 are issued by the software not by HMRC.

Even where a tax summary is available from HMRC it will be less detail than one for a direct submission.

Software meets HMRC requirements by submitting data not a PDF

When tax return data is submitted to HMRC, it is simply the data - it doesn't look like a nicely formatted PDF.

The documents that we share with our users also includes the data - the full data in the SA100 and abridged for the SA302.

While the documents have some formatting, they don't need to look like the paper forms introduced in the 1990s. We know that this can surprise some organisations, especially those where the processes were established in the era of the paper return.

Look for an IRMark not a crown

Under self assessment the IRMark is the confirmation of HMRC's receipt of the data. This is a long string made up of letters and numbers. It relates to each submission which includes the calculation - if there is an update this will have a new IRMark.

You will not see an HMRC logo or crown on our documents - we and other recognised software developers are not allowed to include it (even if some do).

SA302

The SA302 is a record of someone's tax submissions made directly with HMRC's own website. Effectively it's the result of filling in the HMRC multi-page tax return form.

If someone uses third party software such as untied, then there is no formal SA302. untied provides our users with a copy of that data together with HMRC's IRMark confirmation of receipt. This is the equivalent of the SA302.

It should be accepted by most parties directly. You can see an official list here of the lenders who accept an SA302 or tax calculation printed from commercial software like untied.

SA100

If you require an SA100 - this is the tax return. As we have noted, it may not look like a traditional paper return as the data is what is filed through software.

On request if needed by someone seeking a reference we are able to provide a digitally signed version of this that confirms the data is as submitted.
