Computer says no - why can't I sign up to MTD?

You may be getting messages from HMRC saying to sign up to Making Tax Digital, but then find that you can't do so.

There are a number of reasons for this - and they are likely to relate to data points in HMRC's records for you that aren't yet supported in Making Tax Digital.

It could be that you have a payment plan in operation, partnership income or something else.

All this will be in MTD, but we all have to wait until the system is ready for the sign-up so your records can be moved across. For most people we expect things to be able to support the sign-up by the start of 2026.
