HMRC letters about MTD

If you are in MTD early then HMRC may send you letters and other communications.

The messages are more urgent - and possibly scary - than the reality.

Remember they are testing their messaging as well.

Several users have contacted us about this. We want to reassure you and we talk to HMRC almost every day. If in doubt, get in touch.

Right, not rushed

Even though untied users filled the full podium for being first, second and third for MTD filings in 2025/26, our goal - and ultimately HMRC's - is to help make sure things are right by the end of the process, rather than rushed.

It means that at times we may say not to file something if we think there is something not quite right in either the data or the process.

Quarterly updates

If you are in MTD early then you can choose to do quarterly updates but you do not need to do so every three months. One will be completed as part as the end of year process to mop up any outstanding obligations in HMRC systems.

HMRC may still remind you that your final quarterly update is due by 5 May

The final quarterly update is in theory "due" by 5 May (or possibly 7 May) but even once you have sent this, it is not your final figure. This will come through another update that you submit as part of your end of year process.

So if you don't have the numbers that's fine. You can submit whatever you have. Or because it's voluntary, choose not to submit these updates at all.

End of year

The end of year deadline is 31 January. The end of year process is here.
