Advanced features for agents and other advisers using "untied"

This video walks through many of the features in "untied" for agents, including custom tags and special filters. Read on for more detail.

We know that the relationship between you and your client is important, and that they may be relying on you to manage their tax affairs. These tools help you work efficiently with clients, maintain high‑quality digital records, and meet Making Tax Digital (MTD) and self assessment obligations confidently.

A unified view for agents and clients

"untied" provides a consistent experience across both agent and client accounts. This means you and your client see the same screens, meaning conversations about transactions and tax positions are simpler.

Clients also have access to the "untied" mobile app, which allows them to:

  • tag transactions on the go
  • log mileage
  • connect bank accounts, including those that require same‑device authentication

Custom set-up to suit your client relationships

If you make "untied" available to your clients and we bill you directly, we can disable client filing, direct communications and other parts of "untied" that you are providing to them.

Bank connections and multi‑account support

"untied" supports the reality of how clients spend money:

  • multiple connected bank and card accounts
  • both business and personal accounts
  • automatic currency conversion using the correct daily exchange rate

Note that the client needs to connect their accounts, and refresh the connections every 90 days (this is a regulatory requirement).

Bank reconciliation

See this article on how to reconcile bank accounts.

Tagging transactions: defaults, detailed tags, and custom tags

In "untied", tax categorisation is referred to as tagging.

"untied" tags can work with simple three‑line accounting or with more detailed tagging and categorisation. To set this up there are some default sets of tags mapped to the MTD categories, or you can set your own practice-wide tag sets.

You can also set up custom tags - each needs to be mapped to an underlying tax tag (which can include personal transactions).

Custom tags help you tailor record‑keeping to each client - the video shows several examples including:

  • split - items needing private‑use adjustment
  • fuel and motor – mapped to personal to avoid disallowed claims
  • property A / property B – tracking multi‑property portfolios
  • to discuss - items needing a client conversation

Rules to automate tagging

Rules help automate repetitive tagging, such as:

  • tagging all “rent” items as rental income
  • automatically applying split percentages
  • applying rules retroactively to untagged transactions in the current year

Rules don't apply to previous years - we have other bulk tagging methods for this.

These greatly speed up ongoing bookkeeping and maintenance.

Importing and adding transactions

Agents can supplement bank feeds by:

  • importing spreadsheets
  • adding manual transactions
  • adding contra entries (useful for net‑of‑fees payouts such as from letting agents)

Managing personal vs business transactions

"untied" supports different practice approaches:

  • you can tag all personal items as personal, or
  • choose to only tag transactions affecting the tax return

Either approach works.

Mileage and journey logs

The "untied" mobile app allows clients to:

  • log journeys automatically
  • add journeys manually
  • add a total for the period

Mileage is automatically calculated using HMRC rates.

Default and custom filters: finding exactly what you need quickly

"untied" provides powerful filters to help agents sort and understand transactions quickly.

Filters help you:

  • identify transactions with specific characteristics
  • speed up year‑end adjustments
  • focus discussions with your client

Examples include:

  • finding gift aid / charitable donations
  • interest and dividends
  • suggested split transactions

Default filters

There are default filters built into the transaction grid that can support:

  • income‑only and expense‑only views
  • personal transactions
  • filters by MTD source (trades, UK property, foreign property)
  • filters by account, description and amount
  • filters in combination eg "Vodafone transactions from January to March" tagged as split.

Custom filters

You can also create a custom filter with more complex variables from this link.

Handling non‑MTD sources

"untied" also supports non-mandated sources:

  • dividends
  • bank interest
  • employment income (pre‑populated for MTD clients)
  • capital gains
  • EIS / SEIS / VCT
  • UK property
  • partnership income
  • other foreign income
  • SA109 (residency) is supported but deferred for MTD

Note: Trust income is not supported

Live tax calculations

Live tax calculations update automatically and include:

  • each income source
  • trading/property allowances
  • relevant adjustments
  • non‑MTD information such as gift aid and pensions

This helps with forecasting and planning during the year.

Making tax digital: quarterly updates and year‑end finalisation

Quarterly updates

"untied" shows MTD obligations and allows:

  • automatic submissions (if the client enables this)
  • manual submissions by the agent (or client depending on the relationship)
  • specifying the books‑made‑up‑to date

Tax calculation data

"untied" displays HMRC’s calculation too.

Year‑end

For each MTD income source:

  1. submit a final update
  2. apply adjustments
  3. finalise the full year’s tax position

A PDF summary can be generated for clients before filing.

Agent dashboard and practice tools

"untied" includes a suite of agent‑focused features including an agent dashboard showing progress across all clients.
