How do I contact HMRC?

There will be times when you need to contact the tax authority, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

HMRC do not offer email support. And in some cases you may need to write to them on paper.

They do offer webchat where you can ask to speak to an adviser. You may also ask a general question (don't include personal details) in their forums (this is a separate login - and your username may appear publicly against any question you ask, so choose it wisely).

To help our users, we did some research on the best times of day to call HMRC.  We discovered that it was easier and quicker to talk to an HMRC agent towards the end of the week, particularly on a Thursday morning as soon as the phone lines opened at 8am.  You can read all about this in our blog - Call HMRC in the morning for shorter waiting times.

Be careful

There are a few people out there who sadly want to catch out taxpayers.

We have seen examples of adverts that use a premium rate telephone number for HMRC. These are not genuine HMRC numbers.

There are also letters purporting to be from HMRC where it is hard to identify that they are fraudulent. If in doubt, contact HMRC via a number that you find on their website - don't respond to links in a letter.

You may also get a call or a text that claims to be from HMRC. These may also be scams. HMRC have advice here
