Getting started with "untied" for advisers

"untied" for advisers is designed to make it simple for tax professionals to onboard clients, connect to HMRC for Making Tax Digital (MTD), and collaborate on income tax and MTD submissions. This article provides an overview of the key features and how to get up and running quickly. It can be used alongside the explainer video on this page.

Accessing the adviser platform

Advisers can sign in at https://advisers.untied.io.

Log in using your adviser credentials which we have provided you. These are different to the credentials you may use to log into "untied" as a user. If you get stuck, don't worry .. simply reach out.

The "untied" team can enable multifactor authentication (MFA) to provide an extra layer of security. MFA is recommended once you move beyond testing with demo users.

Demo clients

Contact us to have demo client accounts set up to help you familiarise yourself with untied, and to train your staff and clients.

Understanding client MTD status

Once signed in, you'll see your client list along with each client's MTD status. This makes it easy to identify:

  • MTD Sandbox - for testing in HMRC’s official environment
  • Self Assessment - clients who are not using MTD
  • MTD Enabled - clients fully connected for MTD filings

These statuses help you understand the right next steps for each client.

Connecting your agent account to HMRC

To file MTD submissions on behalf of clients, you must link your HMRC agent account to "untied".

Before doing so, you need to tell us your Agent Reference Number (ARN).

Once we have added your ARN to your account, select Connect to HMRC, then complete the authorisation process (this will fail without your ARN being set up first by "untied" in your account).

Once connected:

  • All MTD submissions will route through your agent account
  • Your Agent Reference Number (ARN) displays at the top of your dashboard

Adding new clients to "untied"

Select Add client to invite someone to join "untied".

You'll see:

  • A template email you can send or customise
  • A unique link containing an adviser reference code

This link handles the entire onboarding process for you.

Billing and feature controls

"untied" can configure:

  • Whether the client pays for the software or the adviser pays centrally
  • Whether clients are allowed to submit to HMRC or whether only advisers can submit
  • Whether clients get emails from "untied" or not

Contact the "untied" team if you'd like these settings customised for your practice.

Using "untied" for clients without giving the client direct access

Each "untied" account is associated with a client email address. If an email address needs to be changed, for security purposes we do manual verification of this.

Generally a client will be able to access their own "untied" account, even if it is paid for by the adviser. This will enable them to link bank accounts and to refresh the connections (which has to be done every 90 days).

If you are using manual transactions or uploads, and the client won't have direct access, you'll still need an email address for each client.

We suggest to use "plus email addresses" for this - they are supported by Microsoft and Gmail ... it means that any mail to user+name1@domain.co.uk is directed to the email address of user@domain.co.uk ... but is treated as a separate address in "untied" (and other systems). You don't need to configure this generally in Microsoft or Gmail ... try sending yourself an email to user+name1@domain.co.uk and see if it comes through.

Sending MTD agent authorisation invites

After adviser functionality is activated, you will see an Invite button next to each client (they'll need to be in "untied" first).

This generates your personalised HMRC agent‑authorisation link.

This replaces the need to manually source links from the HMRC Agent Services Account.

You can track outstanding requests under MTD auth requests → Request status

Managing and refreshing client access

In the Clients view:

  • You can open a client’s "untied" account to see what they see
  • Anything visible to you is also visible to them, supporting transparency
  • If a client says they have accepted their invite but you cannot see them yet, select Refresh client list

This ensures your dashboard reflects the latest client authorisations.

Accessing client’s record

Opening a client shows you the same interface the client sees, including:

  • Income and expense tags
  • Transactions and records
  • MTD obligations and deadlines

Advisers may also have additional controls depending on account configuration.

Everything is logged as an adviser action - and any filings from 2026/27 onwards are made using your agent token for MTD (while you should still be using your token, this is not enforced in 2025/26 in order to facilitate testing of HMRC systems).

Using custom tags to organise client data

Custom tags allow advisers to structure client information in a way that fits their workflow.

You can create tags under:

Profile and settings → Custom tags

  • Advisers can set tags practice‑wide
  • Clients can also create tags once they are in MTD
  • "untied" can create a default tag list for all your clients if needed

Tags help with filtering, reporting and maintaining consistent record‑keeping across your client base.

Support from the "untied" team

The "untied" team is always available to help you get the most from the adviser platform.

We can support you with:

  • Setting up adviser features and MFA
  • Customising client invites
  • Configuring billing and permissions
  • MTD onboarding and HMRC authorisation issues
